Engage and Participate in Efforts to Create Smokefree Laws in Missouri

OBJECTIVE: Engage with state-level advocacy groups and participate in efforts to move the state towards an indoor tobacco use law.
STATUS: The HLA Tobacco Committee recently hosted a regional planning event to provide education and toolkit for more than 60 regional partners to advance local tobacco control.

The Springfield Tobacco Collaborative has now formed and is meeting on a regular basis.  The collaborative has plans to address Tobacco 21 and Smokefree Housing.

Gain Local Control of Tobacco Taxing Authority

OBJECTIVE: Local control of tobacco taxing authority authorized by local delegation.

Expand Communities with Smokefree Ordinances

OBJECTIVE: Engage with 10 communities to move towards adoption of comprehensive smokefree ordinances.
STATUS: The HLA Regional Tobacco Initiative will be providing grant stipends to the surrounding communities. The funding is to assist communities in developing a smokefree ordinance or expanding work on tobacco free policies. The funding has to be spent by 12-31-17.

Expand Tobacco 21

OBJECTIVE: Adoption of the initiative to raise the MLA from 18-21 years of age in Springfield and engage with 5 communities to move towards adoption of the initiative.
STATUS: The HLA Tobacco Committee continues to meet to develop efforts on the initiative. The committee continues to work with the Springfield-Greene County Health Department on the feasibility of enforcement of a potential policy change. The group also plans to meet with businesses to determine interest and level of support.

Understand the Feasibility of Smokefree Housing

OBJECTIVE: Complete a feasibility study of smokefree multi-unit housing and its impact on health and economy.

Expand Businesses with Improved Tobacco Control

OBJECTIVE: 15 businesses will improve tobacco control through policy and system change.
STATUS: The HLA Business Committee launched a HLA website as a resource for worksite wellness efforts and is focused on the business case for wellness, resources to start worksite wellness and local best practices, including a tobacco-free section.
